Spring is here

Pakistanis around the nation are breathing a sigh of relief after the unusually cold winter that saw snow as down south as Rawalpindi. Pakistani homes lack central heating, an amenity often taken for granted in developed countries. Consequently, harsh weather can take an unusually steep toll on the destitute populace.

Pakistani girls usually have it the worst, as they are confined to their homes, huddled up in the cold evenings. Fashion also takes a back burner as the weather forces people to dress up in unsightly layers of wool. All this is set to change with the arrival of spring. Shalwar kameezes of lawn(a local sheer fabric) and cotton billowing in the wind can make for an unusually flamboyant display.

Spring sees warm weather in the subcontinent while the rest of the world is often reeling with overdrawn cold. Pakistani girls definitely have it good.

Pakistani girls are indeed fast

22 year old Naseem Hamid has given a whole new meaning to the phrase “fast girls”. Winning the womens’ 100 meter race in the South Asian Federation (SAF) games with a record, Naseem made many of her countrymen (and women) proud. As she arrived from India, Naseem was treated at Karachi airport to a rapturous welcome. Swarmed by hundreds of fans, the young sprinter appeared humbled by the extraordinarily elaborate reception.

The governor of Sindh pledged over a million rupees on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari and another 5 hundred thousand of his own. Pakistan’s sports ministry also contributed to the prize pool as Naseem appeared set to enjoy monetary rewards from multiple sources. Lawyers around the country pressed for full time employment for the athlete as did many prominent members of Pakistan’s civil society. Naseem hails from the impoverished area of Korangi in Karachi, and would now certainly be in a good position to support her family financially.

Getting ready for Basant

Pakistani girls are preparing for the Punjabi spring festival called Basant. Due at the spring equinox, the festival has been celebrated with great zeal in recent years. Lahore, the capital of the Punjab is all set to experience a flood of tourists from all over the country and abroad. The sky will be covered with millions of kites as young people throng the rooftops to compete with each other during the uniquely enthralling event.

Basant has a lot to due with kite flying, dancing and night-long partying. Girls love to wear yellow shalwar kameezes during the season and dress up most fabulously for the occasion. Punjabi girls from Islambad and as far away as Bahawalpur and even Karachi converge upon Lahore to partake in the much awaited Basant celebrations. Girls increasingly into movies

Pakistani girls are really into top end movie these days, thanks to the influx of high class movie theatres in large cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Earlier, both the movie production business based in Lahore and the movie theatres across the country suffered from a lack of patronage. A lack of demand meant that lower-income men would generally go to watch low budget movies in run down, shoddy cinemas across Pakistan.

In recent years, however, the corporatization of the cinema culture has meant a revival of high end cinema, to the effect that officially released Indian and English movies are now enjoyed across the country in top class movie theatres. Pakistani girls especially love to watch the latest Indian flicks as can be gauged by the beautiful crowds thronging cinemas across the length and breadth of Pakistan.

Social networking is popular in Pakistan

With the explosive growth of the Internet in the subcontinent including Pakistan, social networks have become the latest craze for Pakistani youth. Both boys and girls are increasingly found spending time on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Facebook is especially popular among Pakistani girls, with its usage exceeding that of erstwhile popular network Orkut.

Pakistani girls utilize social networks to get in touch with friends and relatives(both near and distant). But gossiping and showing off their latest stuff to not only friends but distant acquaintences is an especially popular activity among the girls of the subcontinent. Indeed, this is the region where the kitty party was invented, and in the age of the Internet similar social functions are increasingly served by social networks.  In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that Facebook has become the kitty party of the twenty first century for Pakistani and Indian girls.

In this picture we see Amina busy in organizing a surprise birthday party for her friend. She and her friends are really excited about the idea of throwing a surprise party to celebrate the birthday of their close friend Hira. Amna wrote us that arranging  a surprise party has always been a fun activity, and keeping it secret is especially the best part. She told us that they blew up colorful balloons and cooked several food dishes for the party. Inviting her other college friends, she is enthralled that her friend Hira loves the idea. The arrangements were great and they all had a great fun.
