Pakistanis this year will be treated to a rather sombre Independence day with the rising flood waters and what not. As if the Air Blue disaster wasn’t enough, the nation was subject to one upheaval after another as target killings in Karachi and the most massive floods in recorded history wrecked havoc on innocent Pakistanis.

As always, the downtrodden females of Pakistan are amongst the most anguished of victims, having been subjected to travails of the worst kind in this third world country. Nevertheless, the brave women of Pakistan have borne countless tests with towering forebearance, putting many to shame. “Today, the girls of Pakistan resolve to rebuild the country and help it gain its ideal place amongst the comity of nations,” writes Sehar Khan from now innundated Dera Ismail Khan.

Pakistani girls from around the country are pitching in and helping with flood relief. The recent floods in Pakistan have claimed thousands of lives, displacing millions and affecting an estimated 15 million people. The disaster is being described by international observers as the worst natural calamity in recent history, exceeding even the Indonesian tsunami in its sheer scale of destruction and loss of life and property.

The recent floods arose from heavy rainfall in Central Asia and the northwestern Himalaya, causing torrential downpours along downstream waterways. High up in the northern mountains of Pakistan, a complex network of rivulets and streams coalesce into major rivers such as the Jhelum and Indus. These rivers, along with western systems such as the Kabul river recently swelled with heavy precipitation, overflowing their banks not just at irrigated areas but also near such unlikely habitations as Nowshera and other cities west of the Indus. Women tend to suffer the most in such calamaties, as they are poorly equipped to defend themselves against the onslaught of nature.

Ladies from major cities such as Lahore and Karachi are pitching in with material and financial help to alleviate the suffering of their unfortunate compatriots. Lets hope the people of Pakistan can manage to overcome what is only the latest in a string of misfortunes to befall this wretched nation.

Pakistan’s favourite daughter in law, Sania Mirza has created a sensation the likes of which hasn’t been experienced in the region since the celebrated wedding of Imran Khan and Jemima. By choosing to marry small town cricket captain Shoaib Malik, Sania has effectively given the boot to over half a billion of her male compatriots in India. With jealousies simmering on both sides of the border – although more so on the eastern side – this relationship promises to be a explosive affair indeed.

Sania Mirza shocked millions of Indian men as she announced her decision to marry Shoaib Malik. The couple have decided to settle in Dubai afterwards, a wise decision given the now manifest tendency of the Indian establishment to play wedding spoiler, Bollywood style and all. As the public awaits with bated breath the possibility of an actual wedding – or otherwise – pent-up emotions on both sides of the border rise with each passing moment.

With the explosive growth of the Internet in the subcontinent including Pakistan, social networks have become the latest craze for Pakistani youth. Both boys and girls are increasingly found spending time on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Facebook is especially popular among Pakistani girls, with its usage exceeding that of erstwhile popular network Orkut.

Pakistani girls utilize social networks to get in touch with friends and relatives(both near and distant). But gossiping and showing off their latest stuff to not only friends but distant acquaintences is an especially popular activity among the girls of the subcontinent. Indeed, this is the region where the kitty party was invented, and in the age of the Internet similar social functions are increasingly served by social networks. In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that Facebook has become the kitty party of the twenty first century for Pakistani and Indian girls.
