The Pakistani blogosphere is abuzz with what is alleged to be imminent political change in this usually stagnant nation. GEO TV has been banned in some cities, and now reports are coming in of Shireen Rehman’s supposed resignation.

What is most probable, however, is that its much ado about nothing. In Pakistan, its always business as usual. Our readers have chimed in with their views on the issue. Shireen Abbasi says from Lahore “Nawaz Sharif isn’t exactly the most desirable of leaders, and the poor, lethargic and apathetic population of Pakistan can’t be asked to put their lives and properties on the line for just another selfish politician.”

Ayesha Chaudhary, a BBA student from Islamabad writes “This pathetic circus of a Long March is really about political opportunism and nothing more. Nawaz Sharif doesn’t really give a damn about the judiciary or instituational integrity”.

Meanwhile Female lawyers led by Samina Nauman protested the government’s decisions against the Long March. Police restrained Samina in Karachi, an event that has certainly ruffled a lot of feathers.

Pakistani girls celebrated International Womens Day today across the country. With the Taliban banning girls’ education in Swat Valley, this Womens Day holds special significance to the downtrodden girls of this country. While Pakistani girls in major cities like Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi live relatively liberal lives with improved access to education and health care, their counterparts in the mountainous regions of the North have little to celebrate.

The Taliban militia have imposed a barbaric rule in Swat Valley, banning mens’ haircuts and womens education in some areas. “These guys have misinterpreted Islam to suit their whims” says Sabiha Ahmed from Lahore. “Islam encourages womens’ education. While they claim to follow Islam, they are in fact the farthest from it”.

Pakistani girls from all over the country have written in to us expressing shock and outrage over the recent terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore. It is obvious that the young people of Pakistan are especially concerned about the deteriorating law and order situation in the country as they feel that their future is at stake. “This was aimed at hitting Pakistan where it hurt the most” said college student Saima Karim from Karachi.

Mashal Khan from Peshawar said “At a difficult time like this, the terrorists wanted to show that Pakistan is hopeless. We must not allow this perception to hold”. Many young people believe that in order for Pakistan to succeed as a nation, all Pakistanis must come together to take a united stand against extremists. “Nobody should provide support to any fringe elements, as this kind of violence is what they stand for” said Nabeela Hasan from Islamabad.

Amina Haq writes in from Islamabad: “Why do guys go nuts when they don’t even know who the girl is?” Ah, that is the age old question nobody, and I mean nobody, from Calcutta to Quetta has been able to answer.

It would be great if we could get in touch with her; however, we have no idea who she really is or where she lives! So guys, keep in mind, its for your eyes only! We’re not a dating agency (yet!)

In what may be one of the most high profile cockups in the nascent history of the Internet, Pakistani government tried to ban Youtube. Unfortuntely, due to the fact that many people employed at Pakistan Telecom really don’t have a clue as to what they’re doing, they caused Youtube to be blocked from the entire Internet!

Yes, you heard that right. An attempt to block Youtube from Pakistani users actually resulted in a worldwide access denial. Pakistani girls are up in fury at the attempt to block one of their favorite websites from Pakistan, as are their male counterparts.

Samina Khan, resident cultural analyst at Pakistanigirls.org said that while the ban on Youtube may have played to the sensibilities of certain segments of the population, most people used Youtube for entertainment purposes and for watching videos and music. Any attempt to filter out objectionable content from Youtube will be affected by the fact that many people don’t have the knowhow or will to access it in the first place, thereby watching only what they are searching for.
